Battery stops charging when plugged in and powered off

I found a seemingly new problem recently after a battery change. When I plug in my device while powered off, the current reading on the keyboard screen goes from -0.5 amps +/- 0.1 to about -0.05 amps after a few seconds and stays there. When I turn it on, it charges again around -0.4 amps, but drops down again when I shut the device off. I have tried this with my original charger and a Ravpower wall wart my wife and I use for our regular laptops.

My device is an RK3588 upgrade on mainboard version 1.0, battery board 2.0, and firmware 20251030.

For the past few months, I have been using 706090 batteries. When I go to the battery status screen, the voltage reading would jump to 9.9V for a second or two before dropping down to more believable levels.

Last week I switched back to the 606090 batteries that came with my device when I bought it in 2023 to see if they did the same thing. I had disconnected them at around 50% and kept them in an anti-static bag.

When I re-installed them, I started having the problem where the battery stops charging at a random percentage. I disconnected and reconnected them, then went through a recalibration where I charged them to 100% and then ran the device until it shut off automatically.

Since then, they seem to stop charging at just above 60%. They were 66% when I left for work this afternoon with the device plugged in and powered down, but had dropped to 62% when I came home. The charging light was on, but the current seemed to vary between about -0.03 and -0.05. I could get the current to go back to -0.50 if I plugged it back in, but after a few seconds it would drop down again. Turning it on seems to help, but the current drops after I shut it down.

I think my next step ought to be trying the 706090 batteries again and see if they run into the same problem.

What do you all think? Any other suggestions?

How long had you left the device since the last charge? Did you leave the power switched on?

I do find the Pocket needs regular charging. I also have the updated battery PCB but I still like to regularly cycle the battery twice a week. Previously I had a very similar issue to yours with the original battery PCB and replacing with the 2nd fixed it. So in my head I do wonder if it’s the board and not anything else you are doing.

I tried the old “unplug it and plug it back in” trick with the batteries in the case and now it seems to be charging just fine.

The thing I noticed is that, prior to my recalibration, the charging light would shut off when the charging stopped. Afterward, the charging light would stay on while the charging current was just above zero, hence my concerns that there was an underlying problem.

I saw this in another thread about charging stopping at a random voltage, but it was interesting to see the different behavior of the charging light.

To reiterate, I have the main board version 1.0 and the battery board version 2.0. I also have the original daughter board with the standby switch.

Anyone have any insights?
