Does crowd supply still make sense during a trade war?

Will the standalone RK3588 V2 carrier board + wifi/bluetooth board upgrade for the pocket be available there soon as well, or should I order that directly from the mnt.re store?

I have to admit I’m not looking forward to paying tariffs on outstanding orders or my kickstarter for the Reform Next, but I’m resigned to buying almost anything being a dumpster fire for the foreseeable future, and if I’m going to pay, it might as well be for something open, repairable, and built by queer community members, you know? I guess I’m assuming that even Mouser/CrowdSupply’s internal shipping of stuff is going to be affected.

I think the de minimis thing which is (understandably) keeping parcel post from shipping to the US is going to be even more of a disruption, but I’m no expert.

Wondering this as well. I already have an outstanding order from the MNT shop, but with all this tariff chaos…

Then again it was only a 150€ order pre-shipping, so even if I get overcharged and it’s something like 25% that’s 37.50€… not great, but probably still worth it to me to get it sooner. I’d certainly be reconsidering if this was a Pocket order though!

Normally you should not need to pay any unexpected customs when buying via Crowd Supply/Mouser inside the US, as they are a US business. The importing already happens between us and Mouser. It’s possible that CS/Mouser will add some extra fees at checkout in the future though to compensate for tariff losses, but AFAIK this isn’t the case at the moment.

MNT shop shipments to the US are a bigger concern. I’m looking into a service by UPS called Global Checkout to ā€œlandā€ the tariff/import costs so they are known and paid at checkout, and UPS will guarantee (like an insurance) this cost. This is a new and slightly complex API and will take some time to implement though.

For any fellow canadians, Mouser.ca has a warehouse shipping MNT products from Ontario with free shipping. Compared to ordering from Crowdsupply (shipping from USA) or MNT directly (Germany?), the prices are better and you risk not having duties or any added fees on delivery. With the retaliatory tariffs and the instability, they have the most consistent pricing, they offer free shipping in Canada and there shouldn’t be any additional duties or fees since the warehouse is national.

Edit: I confirmed with their chat support, they offer UPS, DHL and FedEx shipping and Mouser will pay any additional duties or fees. It’s about 1500 CAD total for a Pocket Reform.

sorry, it took me a while to get around to digging up the invoice. the ā€œHS codeā€ was 9503009040, description ā€œother- construction sets and coā€ , and ā€œsima codeā€ 69.54 … it was a custom Lego set from Cyan Worlds, the game company.

I see the solution for CrowdSupply will work well for those in US. Unfortunately, being in Canada, I guess those of us north of the border won’t benefit from the US distribution and thus get hit with the crazy import fees. At least some people will be spared

BTW for those looking for the Mouser MNT page, the above link didn’t work but I found MNT’s products at MNT Research @ Mouser.ca

I’d like to post a comment here about paying Tariffs on stuff from Germany to the US. I’ve been reading through this thread, as I bought a Reform Classic back in May from the MNT shop.

I got it delivered yesterday. I paid $2056 (€1800) for the laptop, and my import fees to UPS were $172.55 (€202.86). I was expecting at least 15% (~$341/€401) based on this thread, and many other places I’ve seen online.

I couldn’t tell you why mine were lower than what others have talked about (I’m in East TN, USA), but I’m really glad because I was NOT ready to pay a 25% import fee on this; it already took me a few months over one year to save up for this laptop as it was :grimacing:

UPS has apparently started ā€œdisposing ofā€ shipments that are sitting in their warehouses for too long: UPS is 'disposing of' U.S.-bound packages over customs paperwork problems

Do I need to be concerned that my $1000 notebook is thrown into a shredder before it can be shipped back to Germany (still hate that part, TBH)? Or does MNT have some kind of ā€œbusinessā€ contract that prevents this kind of BS?

Yes, we obviously have a business contract with UPS, but we are using Mouser’s UPS account to deliver to their US warehouse, which has a loading dock, receives probably hundreds (or more?) of shipments every day, and there is no reason for any customs problems with our shipments to Mouser (Crowd Supply’s parent company) nor have there ever been so far.
