No battery status and brightness control with trixie-backports

got the kernel and FW on trixie, but apt shows no newer version of reform-tools and 1.71-2 installed at the moment.

screen seems to be behaving much better so my other issues may be fixed, however battery status and brightness control aren’t working post-update though i’m guessing those will be fixed once reform-tools is available for me?

Correct, AFAIK @josch worked on getting the update to his trixie release and it should be available later today.

any update on this timeline? @josch anything i can do to help?

Hi,

for the first time I’ve now used the (slightly hidden) moderation feature to move posts to a new thread. Seems to have worked! I agree with @minute that the original thread should focus on issues of users of Debian unstable from MNT. Debian from reform.debian.net is a different story and nothing which (in my opinion) time from MNT should be spent upon.

As far as I can see, the trixie-backports repository currently ships:

Package: reform-tools
Version: 1.88-1~bpo13+1+reform20251209T125945Z~bpo13+1
Architecture: all

What do you see when you run the following command:

apt-cache policy reform-tools
1 Like

yeah fair

output of that is as follows:

nebula@The-Reform-False-God-Of-The-Abyss-Entropys-Paradox-Conqueror-Of:~$ apt-cache policy reform-tools
reform-tools:
Installed: 1.71-2+reform20251209T125945Z+1
Candidate: 1.71-2+reform20251209T125945Z+1
Version table:
*** 1.71-2+reform20251209T125945Z+1 999
999 trixie/main arm64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
1.71-2+deb13u1 500
500 trixie/main arm64 Packages```

You don’t have trixie-backports enabled it seems?

reform-tools 1.71 is the version from trixie (no backports).

But didn’t you have rk3588?

oh huh, i don’t know why. how do i do that?

i have A311D

Ah okay, in that case, not using backports is indeed fine.

But then you should not upgrade the system controller firmware.

So you have to decide:

  • either use Debian stable but then you cannot upgrade the firmware or
  • upgrade the firmware but then you need kernel 7.1 or later as well as reform-tools 1.88 and that you can only get via backports

will the backports prevent waydroid from working? since it only supports trixie. if not then yeah let’s do that since i already upgraded both FWs

Sorry, I cannot answer that because I am not using waydroid.

ok well how do i add backports then? i’ll take the risk atp

getting the following output after swapping the file

i have no idea what even happened, do i need to keep the reform_trixie.sources? or what did i even do wrong?

As you’re on a311d there’s no need for ezurio-qcacld-2.0. That’s an out-of-tree driver for the qualcomm wifi on the imx8mplus processor module. I would just get rid of that package, i.e. apt remove ezurio-qcacld-2.0

thanks for letting me know

that said i rebooted to test and let everything come up since these were pretty intensive updates, but unfortunately i’m getting no screen output now, when i turn it on the backlight comes on with no display on the screen.

Your version of ezurio-qcacld-2.0-dkms is the version from Trixie. That version has no idea that kernel 7.1.3 exists. You cannot upgrade your kernel to a version from trixie-backports and then not upgrade the components which assume an old kernel version. But that being said:

That is correct. But the package you have to remove is ezurio-qcacld-2.0-dkms. Please run sudo reform-check it will tell you about the same thing.

What file did you swap? You mean you removed the trixie repo from reform.debian.net and replaced it by the trixie-backports repo from reform.debian.net? That is correct, yes.

Do you have uart output of the boot that you could copypaste here? That would be the easiest way to debug this.

how do i get that?

yeah did that. removed the reform_trixie.sources in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, and replaced with the reform_trixie-backports.sources

can and will as soon as i can get it to boot.

Do you have ssh access to the box?

I don’t know how you have your Pocket configured but maybe you get display output via HDMI?

Without display or serial output it’s not possible to see the error messages and then everything you do will be done “blindly”. If you cannot connect over the network and if you don’t have a uart adapter for serial output, then your next best option would be to flash the latest system image on an sd-card, boot that and then either manually or via reform-rescue-shell get a shell in the installed system and try to investigate what could be wrong. Think you can try to run inside that chrooted shell would be things like

  • run sudo reform-check or
  • you could downgrade your kernel (installing the bookworm kernel again) or
  • you could re-install the kernel and make sure that the kernel installed successfully before rebooting or
  • regenerate the initramfs and make sure that the mnt-sc as well as the panel modules are in it

i have a Flipper Zero which I’m pretty sure with some cables I got from a Raspberry Pi Pico devkit (single pin header cables) I can use Flipper as the UART adapter. edit: yeah right there in GPIO “USB-UART Bridge”

are those last 4 bullet points all things I can do over the UART once I get it as well? if so i’ll report back later when I have time to test Flipper or backup plan to do an SD. if I can’t do those 4 things over UART, lemme know what I can do over UART so I have more to try

full UART dump after much fuckery

long and the short of it is it’s kernel panicking for some reason (next code block is error highlighted)

from the looks of it, i can escape this issue by using the autoboot interrupt uboot mentions and booting back into 6.12.94-mnt-reform-arm64 then following instructions similar to this post on askubuntu, just thinking out loud here to avoid causing more damage.
