- I too learned about the laptop on Fedi. Originally I just wanted a new laptop to replace my old ThinkPad, and I wanted to avoid the mistakes I had made when I selected the previous one. So I was looking for a device that was built with Linux usage in mind. For this reason I asked on Fedi, which ARM laptops would be available on the market, and was (amonst other options) pointed here. That was months before i actually ordered though, due to the steep price… However, the Reform had three very convincing arguments, that made me buy it in the end: Modular build, a very good keyboard, and a good screen. So, after trying to resist the urge, I ordered one early this year.
- I use the Reform mostly for hobby gamedev and other hobby coding projects. I have been playing around with Lean4 a lot in recent months. The A311D is a bit slow for the Lean4 language server, but it is still fast enough, as long as one invests some time to properly organize the code instead of dumping everything in one huge file. Currently I am coding a small Rust game project, for which the A311D is easily fast enough.
- I like both, dogs and cats. I don’t have any cats or dogs yet, but my wife and I are planning to adopt two cats soon, and we are currently preparing our apartment for them.
Hi everyone,
1. How did you first find out about MNT Reform and/or what brought you here?
I already had a Thinkpad X1 and a desktop, but I stumbled across the modular Pocket Reform online and had to get it. I bought it in April 2025, and here I am! My first issue was instability after installing a WD M.2 SSD 1TB. That led me to this community. Now I’m using a low-power M.2 SSD, and it’s running smoothly—loving it so far!
2. What do you do / want to do with your Reform Laptop most?
I just got my Pocket Reform, so I’m still exploring. Right now, I use it for programming, server management, email, web browsing, and streaming radio (Radiko via a custom script!). I’m excited to dive deeper into customization, especially with Vim and Debian.
3. Are cats or dogs better, (or robots)?
I had a cat, but sadly, she passed away last December. I love dogs too, but losing a pet is tough. So, maybe a robot companion next? What do you all think—cats, dogs, or robots?
Looking forward to learning from everyone’s setups and tweaks! Any favorite Pocket Reform customizations to share?
I met minute back in 2018 at 35c3. By then he was already working on the reform and had brought a prototype to the event. I knew from the moment I saw it, that I wanted that laptop.
I might add that I’d been a big fan of the Novena laptop before, but being at university in 2014 I could unfortunately never afford one. But ever since I’d definitely been looking for a modern equivalent.
From there, I followed minute on Mastodon. When two months later he announced that the mnt reform was not going to happen and he was starting over with the design, I was afraid that he might be one of those people who endlessly re-design their project without ever finishing it.
So when later that year he announced the production of 8 prototypes of the mnt reform 2, I made sure to quickly order one of those, before he’d have a chance to re-design it all over again
The reform is my personal laptop and I use it for whatever I use computers for in my free time. In theory that involves more interesting but for the last couple of years, much of my time goes into managing the local hacker space. So writing articles for the website, really…
Cats.
