Announcement: tagging is now enabled in this forum

Hi,

@minute enabled the tagging feature yesterday and I think I like it and we should use it to have less confusions while solving problems. I’ve already taken the liberty of tagging some posts and would like to encourage everybody to also add tags to their posts as metadata which helps to get to the bottom of issues more quickly. At least for me, it is nigh impossible to remember which user has which SoM for example, so there are now the tags:

  • a311d
  • rk3588
  • imx8mp

It also continues to be important if a problem happens on a system using the repository from reform.debian.net, so there also is:

  • trixie
  • trixie-backports

When a problem is solved, I added the fixed tag to the thread and feel free to use that tag yourself when your issue is resolved.

If you have more ideas on how to use this feature to improve our communication, I’m all ears.

here’s my wishlist of tags to add both for communication and ease of search filtering:

overhaul - this would be for major modifications that change or add large/core functionality, are technical in their installation, and/or are expensive. while the mod tag works i feel like this would be for when multiple mods fit together like chassis intrusion detection and waterproofing, or for major modifications like entirely new frames or form factors that fundamentally change the device. i feel like it will invite more heavy duty modifications and be a great way to see how the hardware can be modified and pushed to the limit.

guide - this would go hand in hand with the above and be posts that are guides and walkthroughs for how to do those things, i personally have a post sitting in drafts until i finalise things that would love both of these tags, and i feel like this would be a great way to filter to find step by step instructions for how to make your device more “yours”.

more OS tags - these would make things way easier. i think on top of Debian Trixie’s tag, Arch, and maybe a few others would be good, since i’ve personally run into issues getting support since my Pocket Reform’s running trixie instead of the default.

hardware, software, and firmware - these tags are self explanatory, and could help in filtering when trying to find an issue, as well as let people search for inspiration in conjunction with the above guide tag.

wireless - this tag would be for wireless focused things since there’s lots of cool stuff you can do like cell modules, but may belong clumped within a hardware tag.

would love to see all those get added

Are you able to create new tags or does it require a mod to create tags for you? When you crate a new thread, can you only select amongst the existing tags or also create new ones?

I could only select amongst the ones already made when I tried

Thank you for your feedback!

I created a bunch of the tags you suggested.

If you or anybody else would like me to add tags to their threads which did not exist yet, please reach out to me with a PM. Thank you!

hey just got back to this, i can’t see them, maybe double check permissions or something? it just won’t let me set any of the new ones.

I said I created “a bunch” not all of them.

I am not aware that tags can be restricted in their use with permissions. Can you send me where you found that they can? I’m unable to find this in the docs.

Which tag did you attempt to set and it didn’t work? Was there an error message when you tried?

i completely forgot to reply to this, my bad

i just realised i have to search for the tags i want, only the original ones were listed so i didn’t think they were there, i was expecting them to just, exist in the scroll list but there was no scroll.
