I’m interested in seeing blog posts by people describing the problems they ran into, how they fixed them, where they looked for fixes, what uses they found for the Pocket Reform, and so on.
Thank you! This is a really good blog post I think with a lot of items to take away and improve for MNT.
I think I managed to fix all (?) issues that pertain the software bugs you ran into in reform-tools. If you run into any other software issues, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
I’ll probably do a followup too! I am liking it more and more as I am getting things going.
It’s already a much smoother experience than most open hardware devices, and I have a sense that by the end of the year someone getting a Pocket Reform will find that things “just work”.
I just did an update of the firmware today. What a nice experience!
It sounds similar to me - I wanted to a quick “it’s here, this this is nice, but…” post, and then I got to using it so I posted again… and the more I customise things, the more I’m enjoying it and have more to share! Also, I’m still really learning to be comfortable with Sway and the like, so it keeps tickling my discovery brain
Dave Gauer wrote a blog post called MNT Pocket Reform - Unboxing and First Impressions and talks about powering up the laptop for the first time, the keyboard, the trackball, performance, wifi problems, and the joy of the RP2040 display behind the OLED display.
Having Mine Test on the initial image was a great decision – it worked for me, too.
Well I was going to post this tomorrow but I ended up finishing it tonight but this was my reflections on a week of almost exclusively using the pocket reform:
Oh I use the wifi but I’ve had no trouble with it at all. I can stream video without lag. I also haven’t had any overheating issues: my temps are generally in the low 60s when I’ve checked.
Maybe I just won some kind of cooling dice roll? Maybe the fact that mine was one of the last few dozen crowdsupply models to get built means something was slightly different?
I don’t have a blog so I would just paste my experience here.
I’m a editor of a small publisher, started a pocket reform only work days and the results is surprisingly pleasant(some time even better then x86 because of the fanless design),I can basically work everywhere with out the awkwardness of a huge laptop.
I can work at toilet, during launch, lying on bed, out door hiking and even during shower if I have a great idea thought I can type it down(of course I put it in a plastic zip bag)
In work I just use a portable monitor and an external keyboard the seamless work experience not even Apple could compare because everything happen on same device.
The only downside is battery life but with Dell PW7018LC Notebook Power Bank Plus, it’s plenty enough to go through a day with out using wall plug.
Pocket Refrom really make me remember the IBM palm top my father used to use, it’s cool and convenient, and I would recommend to everyone who looking for a UMPC.
As a prospective customer of Reform it is good to know you are getting on well with yours, for the same reasons that I hope will work for me. But I’m not sure I can agree with using a laptop on the toilet. Unless you’re Jeff Bezos who considers staff taking bathroom breaks to be frittering away company time. And just how long do you take to shower?
I haven’t seen this posted anywhere in the community yet, but it looks like iFixIt have done a tear down and have a page on their site for the Pocket Reform. 8/10 rating!
