Broken trackball key tabs

This is probably not relevant for you because you need a tiny logo but for general application there is the MNT Remix logo: symbol-for-derived-works/mnt-based-reform.svg · master · Reform / reform · GitLab

What I did for my own mods is to use the font for my own similar looking logo. For example my A311D based TV setup is the “MM Board Reform” (in my case, MM stands for “mister-muffin” which is my internet domain). Yes, I’m also not selling it – only visitors to my living room are going to see my “MM Board Reform” logo.

Those symbols are too busy and not groovy at all. No offense to Minute… Even if I could squeeze them onto the keycap, I wouldn’t.

Well ya know, at the end of the day, I wanted neat replacement keycaps for myself. If printing Minute’s signature party piece on a couple grams of PLA is going to be that much of a headache, I’m happy not to share the design

Indeed. Though I also understand why the company has to set some boundaries on use of their trademark, even for people who just want to share their creations non-profit. There is of course always the option to ask @minute about this case in particular.

Also, are you sharing your round keycaps without the logo?

I could but there’s little point: all my keycap is is a recreation of the genuine keycap in FreeCAD, with slightly thicker tabs you can file down to size precisely. If that’s what you want, push the tabs in the original STL file outward in Blender and print that instead.

Well, someone asked me the STEP file today. So I figured I’d remote the MNT inlay from the model and set my repo public again…

I remember reading through this thread with interest when it first came around, and today it finally happened to me: one of the tabs on one of my trackball buttons broke off in the key when removing it to clean out shmutz.

I do not have access to a 3D printer, but I could order from a service. Has anybody had any success doing that?

@UnlikelyLass did you manage to get a new button for your track ball? You can open a support request in our email system if you want since its probably still covered by our warranty.

Of course, you can also design and print keycaps that no longer get in the way of the screws and therefore don’t need to be removed. The trackball can be removed even with the keycaps installed. I’m going to get a textured printing sheet; that will make the surface of the keys look better.

No peeling, no breaking :upside_down_face:

This tip has been a life^W keycap-saver. Now I only remove the trackball lid twice a year or so compared to doing it every week or two before.

It looks like they’re in the store, so I’ve ordered a new set – but thanks!
