I’m curious: is it hundreds? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands perhaps? ![]()
If I treat my university psychology courses as a representative sample (what could possibly go wrong?) which has about 60 students per year with one (me) using an MNT device. So the base rate of MNT users is 1/60.
Applied to the global population of 8 billion people, we get about 134 million MNT users.
(and now I need to go into hiding before my statistics professor finds this)
I suppose going by the number of users on this here board would be a semi-valid metric. Considering the hacky and community nature of MNT machines, it’s pretty unlikely that somebody would buy one without ever joining the forum. But I guess some owners are lurking without having an account.
That would put the number of owners around 1,000.
Bad premise: 8 billion people aren’t studying psychology ![]()
You get a lower-bound by looking at the crowdsupply pages. There were 400 backers of the Pocket Reform campaign and 440 backers of the original MNT Reform campaign. I have classic Reform #161 and #223.
So we are talking at least about several hundred units.
I suppose a sizeable number of units have been sold after the crowdfunding round though - particularly the Reform Classic.
Incidentally, is there a way to tell which number Reform I own? A serial number somewhere? I didn’t see any label or anything when I opened it up but maybe I missed it.
Our RK3588 DSI reform come from the same batch and mine has this on the bottom acrylic:
So that’s the assembled (“ASM”) Reform #223. The other Reform with #161 i have is the “KIT” version, so you have to add these two numbers to get to the lower bound.
Oh… Talk about a sticker that was staring me in the face… Funnily enough, I was looking everywhere inside the machine but failed to spot the one sticker on the bottom plate that I had just removed.
Mine’s ASM #244.
My DIY MNT Reform, which I picked up from Crowd Supply earlier in 2025, has #280. My MNT Reform Pocket (which came assembled, also from Crowd Supply) has the same kind of info etched into the base plate, but I don’t see a serial number on it. Might be inside somewhere?
Obviously, these haven’t all been assigned strictly sequentially – mine was on a shelf at Crowd Supply for some amount of time, post-crowdfunding…
It might be fun to have an owner’s registry - one in which you can stay anonymous / use a nickname of course. It’s quite common with manufacturers of bespoke, specialized products that have a community around them.
Here for example, my velomobile’s manufacturer’s registry: you know exactly who has what and how many bikes they’ve sold over the past 20-some years
Oh? Where is that etched exactly?
In Debian we have this map:
I’m free to enter any coordinates for my location so you can see that I live in Würzburg but of course the indicator does not point at the house where I actually live. ![]()
If you flip the pocket over, with the hinges up, there’s a box of info etched into the lower left corner – it’s got the same regulatory info as is on the clear sticker of the MNT Reform. In my case, it does not have a serial number.
Vs. the sticker on the MNT Reform (sorry about the poor contrast, I chose to stick it on the back of the base near the hinges):
Oh you mean the badge! Yes, and I really should be updating this list with the hardware in the Pocket and Keyboard 4.0 and motherboard 3.0:
