You can ignore this post if you do not have the reform-desktop-full
meta package installed.
If you do have it installed (you can check that by using dpkg-query --showformat '${db:Status-Status}\n' --show reform-desktop-full
for example) and you run sudo apt full-upgrade
, you will probably notice that a lot of packages are going to be pulled from the Debian archives:
Upgrading: 7, Installing: 642, Removing: 0, Not Upgrading: 0
Download size: 519 MB
Space needed: 2,116 MB
This is because as of today, the reform-desktop-full
meta package replaced its dependencies on wayfire and greetd+tuigreet with gnome+gdm. If you do not want to install gnome and gdm and are happy with your setup, feel free to remove reform-desktop-full
before upgrading. It is just a meta-package (a package with no content itself and only dependencies on other packages) and can be safely removed.
If you do on the other hand decide to keep reform-desktop-full
and upgrade it, thus pulling in gnome and gdm, you will notice that on your next boot, tuigreet will have been replaced by gdm. You can then use gdm to log into either gnome or sway or wayfire. You can choose which desktop you want to use by clicking on the small cog wheel on the lower right hand corner of the login screen. That cog wheel appears only after you select your username (at the point where you type your password).
This upgrade should not brake anything. If it does, please report your issue and Iām going to do my best to fix it.
The background of this switch is that MNT decided to ditch wayfire and replace it with gnome. sway is still an option next to gnome in the reform-setup-wizard. Nothing stops you from continuing to use wayfire of course if you like.
Thank you!
