Maximum size for SSD in MNT Pocket Reform

Hey there

I’m in the fortunate position of having ordered a MNT Pocket Reform and now I started planning my mods.

I wanna add a SSD with an appropriate heatsink but I’m not sure whether a WD Black series with heatsink would fit. I haven’t found any information on the clearance between the mainboard and the cover. Does anyone have information on this or maybe someone tried putting in a SSD with heatsink?

Thanks a lot :smiley_cat:

Cheers,
Triss

Hello,

I tried WD Black M.2 NVMe SSD before and it did not work well, maybe something to do with its power hungry nature.

I do not think there is a room for SSD heatsink in Pocket Reform.

Hope the above helps.

Thanks for the reply :smiley_cat:

I did some research. I guess I should switch to a less power hungry SSD :smile_cat:
Maybe I can still connect it to the backplate as a heatsink. But I’ll first have to check how hot the plate gets from the CPU.

Just to be clear, we’re talking about size rather than capacity right? FWIW I’m using a 1TB Crucial T500 in my pocket (which does not come with a heatsink). I ordered it based on some reviewer describing it as a low power consumption drive. I’m now less convinced that’s true, but it’s working fine and I can’t be arsed to change it.
Tbh, if an SSD requires a heatsink, I’d take that as an indication it slurps down more power and puts out more heat than I’d really want in a laptop, especially mini laptop like the pocket.

Similar FWIW: I’m using an SK hynix Gold P31/BC711/PC711, 2TB, in my pocket reform. Had no issues fitting it into the case and I haven’t noticed an impact on battery life.

That came to my mind, too. Maybe it’s not the best idea to use a high performance gaming SSD in such a small device

I wanna try the Kingston NV3 with 2 TB now which seems to match the pocket reform a lot better :smile_cat:

Thanks for the suggestion and your experience. If the Kingston doesn’t work as desired, I might come back to to it.

I’ll keep you informed anyway. Maybe it’s not the worst idea to collect some information on different SSDs here :smiley_cat:
