I’m in the fortunate position of having ordered a MNT Pocket Reform and now I started planning my mods.
I wanna add a SSD with an appropriate heatsink but I’m not sure whether a WD Black series with heatsink would fit. I haven’t found any information on the clearance between the mainboard and the cover. Does anyone have information on this or maybe someone tried putting in a SSD with heatsink?
I did some research. I guess I should switch to a less power hungry SSD
Maybe I can still connect it to the backplate as a heatsink. But I’ll first have to check how hot the plate gets from the CPU.
Just to be clear, we’re talking about size rather than capacity right? FWIW I’m using a 1TB Crucial T500 in my pocket (which does not come with a heatsink). I ordered it based on some reviewer describing it as a low power consumption drive. I’m now less convinced that’s true, but it’s working fine and I can’t be arsed to change it.
Tbh, if an SSD requires a heatsink, I’d take that as an indication it slurps down more power and puts out more heat than I’d really want in a laptop, especially mini laptop like the pocket.
Similar FWIW: I’m using an SK hynix Gold P31/BC711/PC711, 2TB, in my pocket reform. Had no issues fitting it into the case and I haven’t noticed an impact on battery life.
I’m getting a Pocket with the RG 3588, and I have some WD Black drives lying around. However, it seems like I might need to get a different drive? I also have a Goodram PX700…
Additionally, just to be on the safe side, I plan to use a 4TB drive (I have too much stuff in local, I know). I assume that shouldn’t be a problem, right?
In general, are there any requirements or guidelines to keep in mind?
I’m still waiting for my Pocket reform but I think the WD black might be too power consuming for that small device.
I plan to go with a Kensington laptop drive and will post pictures once everything’s here and assembled.
i’m rocking a Crucial P3 Plus with 2TB in my Pocket and it’s had 0 issues in terms of power draw. as for heat and hot drives, i highly recommend avoiding them, the backplate can get pretty toasty, mine’s gotten enough to almost burn a little when it’s working a lot
