MNT Keyboard v5 suggestion: ISO enter hotswap support, improved JP legends to bring closer to JIS

I want to first say what MNT contributors have done is great with the current keyboard! A fair number of the languages use an ISO enter layout in laptops. Thus arguably the next big enhancement I’d suggest is allowing for an ISO enter in a v5

Secondly, the JP legends could be enhanced in a future edition to be more in-line with what you find JIS keyboards and laptop vendors. Specifically the following revisions:

  • Update left and right blanks around the space bar to 無変換 and 変換 respectively
  • Update AGR key to ひらがな / カタカナ / カタカナ
  • Update ろ to 全角 / 半角 / 漢字

v4 JP keyboard as depicted in the store:

As implemented by Lenovo: https://preview.redd.it/what-keyboard-is-this-v0-v8niq5dn2s3e1.jpeg?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=75e63922f1cc700cb148ddddf41315bc6cf7eaf6

I fear the problem with that is, that it’s hard to find a keycap for such a key. I brief search online did not yield results. Would you know where to source such a L-shaped keycap from? An important property of the keyboard is, that anybody can hack and modify it. If one of the keycap is a custom shape only produced for MNT, then the property that anybody could build their own keyboard would be lost.

To make sure that this does not get lost, I created an issue about this in the bug tracker:

Thank you!

Yes. It would need to be a different switch as the MBK profile uses the Choc stem and looking around, there are no ISO enters in that MBK profile. There are a number of low profile switches with a MX stem which would allow someone to use the PFF key profile which is a low key profile. Yuzu allows anyone to order ISO enters in the PFF profile in a lot of colors like a purple close to the MNT laptop shell.

Ah, it seems the PFF profile is very recent (announced less than a year ago) and was thus not an option back when the original MNT keyboard was designed. I did some quick measurements and as far as I can see, it seems that a kailh choc v2 switch with a pff keycap would be short enough to fit the reform.

Maybe somebody feels that this is interesting enough to create a derivative of the MNT keyboard.
