I can echo this. It is one of the things I like the MOST about the MNT line. The Classic Reform is a serious tank. I genuinely hope the Next will built just as tank like. I know the Pocket is pretty tank like as well.
When MNT says that their products are meant to last, they are specifically including the durability aspect as well.
I think the black paint on the classic reform is powder coated its held up pretty well for me. Rubbed through in a few small places on the edges, but Iām pretty rough on it. Not sure about black pocket, but the purple pocket seems like its anodized.
RK3588 is definitely hot, not so bad on the classic has it has quite a beefy heatsink. I donāt think it thermal throttles on the pocket but the lid gets uncomfortably hot in my opinion. People are experimenting with aluminum lids that should help. I just slapped an old heatsink from the a311d module on my lid and it helps alot. I think thermals should be pretty good with it on the next as it seems to interface with the whole aluminum shell. Should be more than enough thermal mass to cool everything.
Hello all !
Pre-ordered day one. This laptop itās for me the PERFECT device to write, play and expand my Linux knowledge.
It has an incredible design, itās totally modular and modifiable, and so expensive too
But, I sincerely believe that the price is completely justified. I love the concept, I want it.
I agree with everything youāve all said. And, Iām glad to be apart of the community. Even if I donāt have an mnt machine just yet. The cost in Canadian dollars is just too high right now. If the exchange rate lowers before the pre-order is over I will buy.
I donāt need any more machines right now, but the Reform Next will be on my short list for when I do need another machine. Iām very happy with my Pocket, so MNT Research has sold me on buying more machines from them in the future.
I ordered one, 32GB! Excited to try and get suspend/resume working with the rockchip module. Thats the only thing standing in the way of making my current Reform a daily driver.
What donāt you like about the FW? I have the 13" 12th Gen. Other than the BIOS and firmware communication update issues, itās been a good machine for me. I am considering a Reform Next as well.
Its not robust.
Some parts are made cheap and they are not meant to last, like the usb ports that come out every time I pull the charger cable but there are other problematic parts like the bezel and the keyboard.
I donāt want a laptop that it is just repairable.
I want it to be long lasting first and then repairable.
Im hoping that the reform next would be a proper x230 alternative (which was my previous laptop that I much loved for 10 years until all the plastics started to fell apart)
I appreciate the response. I had an x200 and x220 before getting a Framework. And, I have to agree. I do wish that framework would make a more robust case, hinges and bezel. Iāve actually been having some issues with the backlight glitching out.
