MNT Reform Next: Who's pre-ordering?

The crowdfunder is live on Crowdsupply as of this morning. What did you order? What are you excited about?

Sadly I don’t think I have a use for it in my life right now, I just bought a Framework laptop a few months ago and recently bought an Pocket Reform so I feel all my uses are covered. I will however pick up a t-shirt and maybe the camera module to see if I can do anything interesting with it.

I have done it just few minutes ago.

I’m still waiting on a regular Reform (RK3588). Part of me wishes I was pre-ordering a Reform Next instead, but another part of me is glad that I’ll be able to use this computer in early 2025 rather than waiting until late 2025.

I’m really tempted but still like  :dotted_line_face: :exploding_head: between Reform and Reform Next.
The upcoming changes on Reform motherboard v3 will check a few marks on my list, the Next checks a few others. Unfortunately Reform Classic is a bit more pricey when ordered with RK3588.

So i really want one cause i love my Reform Standalone Keyboards but i still can’t decide which one. :frowning:

I pre-ordered. (32gb variant) As much as I love the Pocket, I just will prefer a 11" laptop to work on sometimes. Plus the design of the Next is once again fantastic and I just love it.

If we can just get suspend or hibernation working on the RK3588 I think we have a real knock out here!

preordered the base model! I wanted 32gb of RAM but not enough to pay $430 CAD for the bump up. I’m really looking forward to this machine! :star_struck:

I said I wasn’t going to, but i just did.

I just ordered mine as it basically eliminates all the reason why I never got the original reform. This is so refreshing in this increasingly soldered down world. I am optimistic this can work as a true daily driver work horse as all my compute happens on my homelab server anyways.

But whether there is a chance for a decent suspend or hibernation solution at launch would be super interesting.

Hi rwa, what changes are those? Would it be worth upgrading the Reform Classic?

I ordered the black 32GB next. It’s my first mnt purchase/support and am pretty excited for the device and for the community. I currently only have a work machine and decided to hold off on getting anything once I heard about the next. It ticks a lot of boxes for me - small and portable (within reason without trading on other aspects), mechanical keyboard, open, modular, fixable, upgradable, style (cool cyberpunk vibes), vibrant community. Looking forward to having a solid machine that I can use for personal projects and some work for many years to come.

Here’s a list of all the changes. I’m excited for pcie x4 lanes and qwiic i2c headers.

is that what’s going into Reform Next?

No, motherboard 3.0 is for classic Reform. The Reform Next has a completely different motherboard split across multiple, independently replaceable boards.

I wish the Comparisons table on the crowdsupply launch page included the MNT Reform Classic (with the V3.0 motherboard) as well.

Really? I don’t think such a table would be very exciting but here you go:

Thanks Josch,

Is there a ballpark price for the v3.0 motherboard + RCORE RK3588 (combo pricing?) for those who want to upgrade their Reform Classic.

I’m probably going to get one.

For the people that own the past versions, does the laptop feel sturdy/solid/robust? (I’m interested in its construction as not to make any sounds when I hold it, move it, press it, open in etc… my ideal laptop should feel like a brick).

if I get the 16gb ram version, will I be able to add another 16gb ram later on with min equipment/knowledge?

on the anodized, bead-blasted aluminum paint: does anyone know if its oil based? acrylic? enamel? powder coated?

and lastly, some people are mentioning online that the RK3588 will run extremely hot without a proper vent/fan, have anyone used that processor before?

I don’t think there will be a “combo pricing”. I don’t know the price for motherboard 3.0 but the price for 2.5 was €250.00: MNT Reform Motherboard v2.5 - MNT Research Shop

You are at the right place! At least the classic Reform is the most brick I’ve ever carried around with me. I’m not careful at all with my hardware but this tank never broke. It had a 3 year old standing on it, throwing it off the couch and even accidentally jumping on it once. Don’t do this at home but classic Reform survived everything so far in my household.

The RAM is soldered onto the rk3588 board itself, so you cannot upgrade individual RAM sticks but only the whole system-on-module.

A bunch of people have upgraded their Pocket Reform or classic Reform to the rk3588 and can probably answer that one.
