MPV freezing, needs kill-9

  • mpv 0.37.0 packaged version

I noticed when running mpv with yt-dlp that i would get what looked like a hard crash; frozen full screen and no controls work. However, Sway has not crashed and I can switch workspaces and kill the mpv process with no issue.

Next step, to rule out yt-dlp, was to try a standalone video file; same result, but no consistency. It just randomly occurs.

Absolutely nothing in the logs or the stdout from MPV. The only other thing I note is that I lose the cursor in the terminal; it is functional but no longer visible.

It isn’t the end of the world and I just download anything I want to watch, but I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen.

Check if you have a default mpv config in ~/.config/mpv and if it has hwdec=auto. If yes, try removing that.

I do have that option in my config. I’ll give that a try! Thanks Lukas.
