Pocket Reform Gaming Thread

The Reform has a gaming thread, and while compatibility between the two devices is basically assumed, I figured it would be a good idea to have a gaming thread specific to the Pocket Reform.

I have nothing to add to this thread to begin with, other than to say that DosBox works fantastically on here as well.

I’ve started to play (again) Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition via Minigalaxy (on the RK3588), and so far it works flawlessly.

I did have a glitch yesterday though - although I think it was more related to the NVME somehow and was unstable (I have games installed on the 2TB drive), but this boot it’s been working well.

Tried a couple of others, like Blackwell Legacy and Masters of Orion 2, but they didn’t work. Tried Blackwell using Box64 a while back but also crashed out.

I also installed Ur Quan Masters (Star Control 2, open sourced), but haven’t had a chance to play it much yet.

for the blackwell games, you might have luck running them through scummvm – there is decent-enough support for AGS in recent releases of scummvm, and the games are explicitly listed as supported in the wiki: The Blackwell Legacy - ScummVM :: Wiki

That’s awesome, it works! Thanks!

SpaceLizard, could you tell me how you got BG2 running? I tried it and it error-ed out.

I just installed and ran it from Minigalaxy (GOG version), and didn’t need any changes. It’s the “Enhanced Edition”, if that’s relevant. Can’t say that I’ve run it for any length of time but seemed fine when I have been on it.

I do have an unrelated problem though, as sometimes there seems to be a problem with the NVME drive either not being detected at all, or sometimes being unstable. Usually shutting down, and flipping the reset switch seems to clear it though.

Yes this can happen, but I think it is a consequence, usually, of trying to suspend or use some other low power state. You might want to check that there isn’t any kind of power savings going on with the drive. If you disable them, it shouldn’t disconnect anymore as it is always up. Maybe.

Just played some Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut on my RK3588 Pocket Reform (on external monitor). I bought it at GOG. My setup:

  • wine-10.0-rc2-amd64-wow64 (prebuilt)
  • box64 from git
  • mesa from git

It has framerate issues but I was surprised it’s playable at all. Graphics look pretty good.

I’ve also recently tried Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut, bought and installed via Steam. At 1280x720 it’s well playable but there’s some bug somewhere that makes the loading screen hang forever once you enter the Wasteland. Unfortunate. Writing this down now I realize I could try the Windows version next, this was the Linux amd64 build.

At 38c3 I played a bunch of dhewm3 with HD texture pack which was pretty immersive with very good performance. I also played pretty far in Return to Monkey Island (Linux build), which works perfectly.

This caught my eye! I’ve played many Wadjet Eye games on (Pocket) Reforms, and the trick is to build the AGS engine yourself, which is open source, and just point it at the original game exe: GitHub - adventuregamestudio/ags: AGS editor and engine source code

Thanks for the tip. ScummVM (as installed via apt) does work really well for the Blackwell Series, and I’ve heard that other Wadjet games may also be supported (like Unavowed).

May try out AGS too, might be good to compare.

Incidentally, also discovering the free and fan-made adventures that work in ScummVM, like “Shadow of the Templars” and “Ghostbusters and The Secret of Monkey Island”
