Would the Pocket Reform keyboard be confortable enough for writing prose?
I am typing on a Planck (width 234mm, no bezel) and I am concerned by the loss of 20% if I use the Pocket Reform (width 200mm, bezels) as my main laptop.
It really depends on you. I personally thing it would be more than possible and maybe even comfortable. But there are some people that just can’t do smaller keyboards, etc.
Hello, apologies for reviving this old thread, but I wonder whether now that Pocket Reform has been out for a little bit, whether existing users have an opinion on this?
Specifically I was hoping Pocket Reform could be an easily accessible tool to do creative writing on for maybe an hour or two at a time. I know people will have their own experiences, but still curious to hear whether people think the keyboard will be comfortable enough for it.
Is the Pocket Reform capable of being used as a creative outlet workstation? Yes, 100%. The battery last for around 2-4 hours depending on how you are using it. Bring a PD powerpack with and you can go a lot longer.
Would it be ideal to use in this way?
This is where things become subjective. My own experience is that it will take some acclimation time. The keyboard spacing requires precision or a lot of erroneous input will happen. If you can overcome this, and you can as it is just a matter of effort and time, then I think it would be an ideal way to use it.
It won’t work for somebody with sausage fingers, but as I find in another forum, there are those who actually want less spacing.
How good are you at typing on your mobile? That might give you an idea of how good you are at hitting smaller keys, although you might have to put it on a desk (and landscape orientation) to type “conventionally” since normally on mobiles we tend to use thumbs.
I think a good exercise is to print out keyboard layout onto paper so it’s 1-to-1 and pretend to type on it. I have big hands and the keyboard is definitely smaller than I would like compared to a regular Planck. That being said, I put in time on MonkeyType and gtypist which makes me more acclimated.
Also, I believe the creator of this thread mislabeled the thread’s category: if you can change it maybe update it to “Pocket Reform”? Otherwise no worries.
Thanks @2disbetter, @Squizzler and @otacmnt for your responses. All makes sense! Would definitely accept an adjustment period and trying it out on a 1-1 print is a very good idea (surely some schematic available on the repo somewhere )
