Several months ago I started a similar thread, thinking the micro-HDMI port on my pocket might have detached from the board – I was absolutely wrong, and I had a faulty cable.
Since then I’ve upgraded to the newer motherboard + sound board with the extra m.2 port, but this morning, alas, the external monitor I was using went black, and when I checked the port I found that this time it really has detached.
While obviously this is sad, I hadn’t actually gotten around to testing the cellular modem, so I might go back to my original MB. The tines on the port seem kind of bent, so I’m not sure how feasible reattaching would be for my measly soldering skills.
EDIT: The new m.2 audio board came with an RCORE carrier board replacement, not the motherboard! So I don’t have an old board to go back to. Still not the end of the world, and it is probably repairable, although not necessarily by me.
15:46 < gordon1> josch: actually pic looks like it can be fixed with just uv
solder mask, most of the pads are in place and the ones what
are ripped are still connected
This is good news, although I unfortunately have fairly poor soldering skills in general, and am not sure how I’d approach using/doing a “uv solder mask”. I can do research, though!
uv solder mask is used to protect the PCB and avoid shorts. Its a coating. Maybe they mean solder paste? Which is essentially liquid solder, you put some in (very little) on top of the pads, put the connector on top, and apply heat to melt/solder (with a hot air gun or a soldering Iron).
Ah, maybe the uv solder mask could be used to ‘glue’ the lifted pads back down, before soldering the connector on them.
oh, that makes some sense! I don’t think I have the manual dexterity to make this repair myself. I submitted a service request to see about either sending it in for repair or buying a replacement – and I see lucie mentioned a v2.0 motherboard for the pocket being worked on over on the fediverse, so… I have many options! And to be crystal clear, this is definitely my having put too much strain on the part, and aside from this port being broken, the entire rest of the machine works completely fine! If using an external display tablet wasn’t part of my use for this machine I’d probably just live with it.
