No battery status and brightness control with trixie-backports

This is the actual error. So I wonder: what is /dev/root supposed to be?

Yes, you can select 6.12.94 in the u-boot menu and if that works, you can start investigating what happens here. But before you destroy evidence by running update-initramfs as suggested by that forum post, could you try and find out why this problem happened in the first place? Maybe there is a bug that we can fix to avoid that others run into the same problem.

If you cannot boot into 6.12.94 then you can perform the same diagnostic by booting from a vanilla sd-card image and getting access to your system on SSD by running reform-rescue-shell.

The interesting output would be:

$ cat /etc/fstab
$ sudo unmkinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-7.1.3-mnt-reform-arm64 /tmp/initramfs
$ cat /tmp/initramfs/conf/conf.d/default_root
$ sudo reform-check

i’ll try that tomorrow and get as much info as I can then. for now I’m closing out my day. i’ll likely be back in ~12-16 hours.

i don’t know how or why it isn’t giving output, but that may be because the above command about the initramfs failed?

it looks like it refused to build the right thing, and put itself into a broken state because it wasn’t able to build the thing, like not building that one module i mentioned back here

didn’t have a graceful failure state (like i kind of assumed it would) so we wind up with a sort of installed 7.1.3 kernel but not really installed because it threw a fit. at least that’s my best guess. should i uninstall the 7.1.3 kernel packages completely, and restart sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade?

Thank you. I didn’t understand where /dev/root comes from. I now read some initramfs-tools code and it seems to be the fallback if no root device was otherwise chosen. So this is the likely reason why you cannot boot and it explains your error message during boot.

The file is probably named /boot/initrd.img-7.1.3.1-mnt-reform-arm64. Can you try again with that filename? If that does not exist either, which files do you have in /boot?

What was the error? If the 4 not fully installed packages are your kernel, then that would explain why you cannot boot and making it install properly might fix your issue.

Choose Y and copypaste the error message (if any).

You ran that command after you successfully extracted the initramfs, right?

If you didn’t extract the initramfs to /tmp/initramfs then yes, that directory will not exist.

This is a problem.

This is a problem.

No. You don’t have the kernel meta packages installed. This has nothing to do with not building the DKMS drivers.

Lucie already advised you to remove the qcacld2 dkms package which creates this problem. You don’t need it on rk3588.

The problem is created because you are trying to use the qcacld2 package from Trixie with a kernel from trixie-backports. The code in trixie has no idea about a kernel from the future. You can also upgrade the qcacld2 package to the version from trixie-backports but there is no reason to waste cpu cycles on compiling a module your machine does not need.

No, you should do the opposite. Please install kernel packages and remove the dkms driver your system does not need.

Can you give me the output of the following command please:

dpkg-query --showformat '${db:Status-Status}\n' --show linux-image-mnt-reform-arm64

strangely, nothing for that kernel image.

ok well one error that seems to not be going anywhere, i’m getting no display out with the main screen. i get output to the microHDMI with an adapter until i enter my encryption password. then it cuts out and doesn’t come back. that said, everything was working fine before when i first booted. (battery, brightness, etc)

i can blindly sudo apt update if needed (since i already disconnected the UARTs frustratingly)

got UARTs back on and am just not gonna take them off for now.

nebula@The-Reform-False-God-Of-The-Abyss-Entropys-Paradox-Conqueror-Of:~$ dpkg-query --showformat '${db:Status-Status}\n' --show linux-image-mnt-reform-arm64
installed

tried sudo unmkinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-7.1.3-1-mnt-reform-arm64 /tmp/initramfs again and then ran cat /tmp/initramfs/conf/conf.d/default_root and got this

nebula@The-Reform-False-God-Of-The-Abyss-Entropys-Paradox-Conqueror-Of:/boot$ cat /tmp/initramfs/conf/conf.d/default_root

also ran the reform check and got this out

so yeah.

(also if i sound cold i’m not tryna be just, really wanting this fixed, and going full “analytical mind”)

oh and as for the kernel errors in reform-check, i booted the previous one since the new one’s video out wasn’t working (though the old one wasn’t now since i ran a sudo apt update and upgrade earlier)

This explains why your system wasn’t doing anything before. You cannot boot without an initramfs.

But didn’t you write in your next message that you don’t have display output?

So you are saying it worked fine first, you did nothing, then rebooted and that boot didn’t work?

That’s too late. It would’ve been valuable to have the output of that command when you were still in the state where qcacld2 had messed up your installation.

Too late. The output of that command was for the other problem you have. Now display is missing which has nothing to do with this file. It would’ve been useful to have the output of this command back when the qcacld2 situation was still unresolved.

You booted into kernel 6.12.94 not into 7.1.3

This needs to be investigated. Can you show me your /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf

This too. What is the output of this command:

grep "setenv fk_kvers" /boot/boot.scr

Maybe. But there are other more glaring problems for now.

You did not. You re-installed linux-image-mnt-reform which is a meta-package and does not actually contain any data.

Don’t run reform-check right after you re-installed your kernel. You should first see if re-installing the kernel actually changed what kernel is getting booted and for that you have to reboot first.

starting post to say that i’ll wait for your next reply before doing anything, including rebooting or anything.

bingo

ok, how can i fix that?

my bad, forgot about that. would it even help if i reinstall the kernel image?

ok, should i go ahead and do that? if not what should i do?

also to clarify: before this i had updated, then rebooted, then it stopped display out, causing the display out post, and then this was a separate boot where i booted old kernel to try and fix things.

That’s too many reboots and posting things from states other than the ones I thought they were from and re-installing things and running commands where I didn’t expect you to run them. We need to get back to zero.

When you boot right now, which kernel is booting?

if i reboot, it defaults to 7.1.3. would you like me to try to boot that now and post UART?

Do a normal boot. Describe what happens with your display and yes, please post the full uart output and reform-check output from that boot.

here’s the full UART from the top to where it hangs waiting for encryption password. going to enter password blindly and then log in

display is off, no backlight, no contents. moving mouse wakes backlight, no contents

Oh whoops, that’s not good.

I cannot reproduce your setup right now. My A311D is in my classic Reform (the machine i’m typing this on right now) and my Pocket Reform has an RK3588 in it. Both work well with Debian with kernel from trixie-backports.

Did you consider the option of downgrading your system controller firmware and then not using the kernel from trixie-backports?

i mean i can temporarily do that, but that doesn’t fix the other screen issue i was trying to fix with @stephano (reason i pinged you is i’m hoping to nerdsnipe you and maybe you have a magic solution to this) here which the new mnt_sc module was meant to fix.

if that’s the final result, i’ll go off on my own and try fixing it myself from here but i’ll wait for you to let me know if i should do that. failing that i’ll downgrade. but i’m also concerned that the ACL thing will still be an issue, so before you go can you let me know how to fix that? even if it’s complicated or tedious

hardware accelerated rendering not working would just make your rendering slower. It does not disable your display.

I can only continue working on this tomorrow. If you figure this out before I do, please go ahead. I first want to see if I somehow get this reproduced myself.
