SD card fails to read, R30 board

The SD reader fails to read the contents of any SD card I put on it.

Flashing the lpc firmware into the board OR hitting the “reset USB (u)” option on the keyboard OLED fixes it, for 5 minutes or so (actually, this last one seems to do nothing, i don’t know why it worked for a few minutes).

Here is what happens when an SD card with the provided system .img written to it is inserted while powering on:

I have the same error for my newly installed R3.0 mainboard. I can’t test the “reset USB (u)” option, because my keyboard-fw ist like from 2021, when I got the reform.

Over at mastodon, @minute suspected that the problem is the recent (yesterday) kernel upgrade 7.1.3. The easiest way to check whether that’s the culprit, you could try flashing an old system image with kernel 7.0.10 to an sd-card and check if that works better:

I’m running on Debian 7.0.13-1+reform20260602T222813Z with this error.

I tried this, on first boot from this image i got to see the background and followed the setup wizard, then the screen got full of read errors.
I powered off and on again, only read errors this time, not a single [OK], ended up in initramfs again like in the picture.

And the “reset USB” thing, I tried it again and it did nothing to fix the SD card reader, not even temporarily.

I tried this system image from 7 months ago. It seems to work correctly with the SD card reader. I booted into it, finished the setup wizard, got into GNOME and ran a 1000 sample 10mb benchmark on the card. No read errors, consistent 19MB/s read. So maybe it is the kernel? This image uses Kernel 6.17.7.

If the issue does not happen for you with 6.17.7 but it does happen with 7.1.3 with the same sd-card then it indeed does sound like a kernel regression.

May I ask you @meluzzy and @max which sd-cards you are using? I have tried with these:

  • SanDisk Extreme Plus (sdxc)
  • SanDisk Ultra (sdhc)
  • SanDisk Ultra Plus (sdhc)
  • MediaRange (sdxc)
  • store.it 32gb (microsd sdhc)

I’m unable to reproduce the issue. Here is the dmesg output for the store.it sd-card with kernel 7.1.3 on rk3588 with motherboard 3.0:

I tested with:

  • SanDisk Extreme 32GB, MicroSDHC UHS-I, speed class 3, A1, Video 30
  • SanDisk Ultra 32GB, SDHC UHS-I, speed class |1| and (10, 120MB/s
  • SanDisk Edge 16GB, SDHC, speed class (4

The usual results of the first or second disk read benchmark:

If the benchmark works (sometimes happens first time you put an SD card, sometimes doesn’t) this is what it usually looks like, it instantly drops from 19mb/s (the common read speed) to 2mb/s.

I managed to pass a benchmark with the slower 16GB card, this is what it looks like (the second benchmark after this one instantly failed on start):

running kernel is 7.1.3-mnt-reform-arm64

So far this appears to be related to the kernel, since older kernels work fine. No idea why it seems to happen on my (and @max 's) R3.0, we both got them recently. It’s also strange how @josch can’t reproduce it. Are all R3.0 the same? (As in, they all use the exact same components or did something change in more recent batches?)((I know normally you would increase the rev number to something like R3.1 but maybe it was a very small change?))

I asked Lucie in the IRC channel and she said that there was no new batch of mainboards.

I would like to try harder to reproduce it. For example until your recent messages I didn’t know which benchmark you were running. I can try running the gnome disks benchmark myself (I didn’t do that yet). So to be sure: you flash the system image to sd-card, you boot that system and from that system (without installing to nvme first) you run the gnome disks benchmark?

Here is my collection of cards:

The one in the bottom center looks like yours:

  • SanDisk Ultra 32GB, SDHC UHS-I, speed class |1| and (10, 120MB/s

Then I’ll focus my tests on that card. Can you confirm?

yes, the fullsize 32GB SDcard and the 32GB microSD you have are similar to the ones I tested with (The micro one failed the fastest but that might be because… it’s faster?). Write the mnt reform system image for RK3588-dsi (I use the .img.gz but I don’t think that matters) to one of them and try to get into GNOME and run the disks benchmark (on the disk not on the partition). First time might pass, second one should fail. Also if the reading speeds are around 2mb/s that’s also a warning something is off.

Btw even though my mnt reform is as recent as it gets, how do you tell when it is a DSI or an HDMI one? because the description in the handbook is a bit hard to visualize, I just assumed it was DSI because it is newer so I used this: Artifacts · build (#22099) · Jobs · Reform / reform-system-image · GitLab · MNT Source

Your classic Reform being “as recent as it gets” means that it’s the DSI variant. The very first units of RK3588 classic Reform were shipped with a HDMI->eDP adapter. But April 15 2025, Lucie figured out how to drive the mipiDSI->eDP converter with RK3588 and since then, the HDMI->eDP adapter board was no longer needed.
