MNT Pocket Reform Mk 2?

What are you wildest dreams for a second revision? I’d hope for a full sized Ethernet port! So, not that crazy pants.

A keyboard that makes better use of the space, such that we would get full size keycaps.

I would also like a screen that takes much more of the bezel space, and for it to be touch based.

Those are the only things to me that would be a great improvement. The Pocket is already pretty excellent.

  • Screen 8-9”. Touch.
  • LiFePO4
  • An interface for a strap

Apart from that, it is pretty ideal

Only thing that prevented me from snagging a Pocket Reform is the ortholinear keyboard. I’ve browsed and considered buying one sooo many times, but I just can’t do it. Thus, I would be super stoked on a Pocket Reform with a staggered keyboard layout!!

Smaller bezel, larger screen; but same body size. Same for the rest, but keep it fanless. Latest cpu board at time of release.

The screen is about all that prevented me from ordering one (getting the Next instead haha) (well that and the need to justify having two reforms).

I think there are a lot of good suggestions in here (although I’ve got to say that I love the keyboard as it is), especially that most of them wouldn’t require replacing the bones of the thing and could make good upgrades!

I’d quite like side panels on the bottom half like on the top half, as they would remove weight. and open it up for more modification with access to side ports. i2c from the SoM would be pretty great, as would running a couple of spare wires in a more consolidated way between the top shell and the bottom shell too.

Pinholes to the reset switches on the keyboard and sysctl would be pretty great.

Oh and a little spring-loaded slot for a tiny screwdriver like a stylus in a DS

Single-cable USB-C docking with DisplayPort Alt-Mode. Plus less battery drain while the device is turned off (or suspended, if we get that working).

My two cents:

  • A “lid closed” switch.

And then there are of course all the “software issues” like:

  • missing suspend/hibernate
  • headphone jack sensing
  • u-boot display support

Reminds me of this thread: Collecting long-standing Reform issues

I would like to add one minor thing. Have symbol chars engraved on keyboard keys. It would be nicer if accented chars are also engraved. Especially when typing password, it is hard for me to remember which key is for which char.

Thanks.

Generally, I’m very happy with the hardware (esp with new RCORE/daughter board on the way), the only thing I’d ask for is a more reliable charging board, and maybe a hardware power button on the motherboard. Bigger screen would eat the battery faster, I’m happy the way it is.

I think the weakest part of Pocket offering is software. Firmware reliability, sleep/hibernate, uboot graphics, qwiic port exposure would be high on my list of priorities, I’m trying to help with this, even if it’s only testing.

Bigger screen and a larger “off” switch.

I love my reform, but the screen limits its usefulness to me. Right now I only use it as a writerdeck. Having a more accessible power switch would prevent the considerable battery discharge.

I saw someone mention LiFePO4 batteries, that would be amazing as they are more stable, but to get the same physical size of battery would significantly reduce the battery capacity.

Working suspend/hibernate, less consumption when “off”, less “clattery” mouse ball and more mature hardware and software stack… getting the z-height down of the PCB stack to make room for better cooling and possibly more room for expansion boards.

I’m pretty happy with it now that I’ve gotten the bigger batteries in it. I think it’s more stable too (needed thicker cables or more caps with the old batteries maybe?).

Would be better if the keyboard will have one row less (42 keys is more than enough), larger caps and somewhat heavier trackball

Would be better if the keyboard had MORE keys

I’m finding myself constantly hunting for the Home/End buttons when coding or writing, as well as Page Up/Down.

And a dedicated Delete key would be a game changer

Adding an extra Column for those 5 keys on the right side, as well as a sixth key for a Right Click would make this a lot more useable

I think the only feature I’d really like to have on a pocket mk 2 would be dp alt mode + data + pd on a single port so we could do a single-cable connection to an external monitor/hub.

Granted, having sleep would also be great, but that’s super dependent on kernel support of the processor. Having a sensor for lid closed/lid angle would be nice, though, so that eventually things could be implemented.

  1. Matte Screen Option.
  2. 7.8” Display
  3. Bump on the f and j keys.
  4. Ethernet port. Dedicated.
  5. SDR port
  6. Keep the size and weight the same.

Like most, I think the most important thing is: Fewer worries that the battery runs out, and suspend/hibernate. If I could use it like my ThinkPad, where I can just close the lid, it sleeps, and when I come back to it the next day, I can open the lid, and it is basically the same charge - that would be so great <3

More reliable software is the other thing. I had two Sid updates that brought the device into almost unusable states. Maybe I should just switch to Josch’s stable distro

My pie in the sky wish would be an E ink display <3 That would be so awesome.

Ideally, to be able to upgrade the current Pocket, too. So, preserving as much part as possible.

The main problems for me are: power consumption (especially when off), unreliability of charging board and inability to suspend the device. If this can be solved it would be a great device.

Better (bigger) LCD would be nice, of course if overall device dimensions would be kept.

At the moment I rather carry my “big“ Reform 2 which also does not suspend. But it does not lose charge when off and its battery life is good enough and it is too heavy (when compared with the Pocket).

My 2 cents, mostly minor complaints:

  • 1 USB-A port
  • Standard Ethernet port instead of IX
  • Full size HDMI, DP, or mini DP instead of micro HDMI (I hate micro HDMI)
  • Option to use less minimal keycaps with symbol hints
  • Larger screen with smaller bezel
  • Bigger batteries

The only other complaint I have, which likely cannot be fixed, is that the keyboard base is too thick. But it’s a mechanical keyboard (it should remain as such) and it needs to weigh more than the top, so I don’t think this can be substantially improved in a modular system like this.

I’ve adjusted to the other quirks. It’s fine as is, it’s the best open hardware mini laptop by far, but these things would take off the remaining rough edges.

Edit: I’ll also second the suggestions for a matte screen (or factory applied matte film), and single port power + DP alt mode + data.
